Hello, I'm Asia Johnson (she, her, hers), the proud owner of Seizing 61:1, a consultancy dedicated to empowering individuals and families navigating the complexities of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). My journey to this point has been deeply personal and professional, marked by both challenges and triumphs.
My path began with the subtle signs in my daughter's behavior – the tiptoe walking, the repetitive motions, and phrases that slowly painted a picture of something more profound. These early signs were the first threads in a tapestry of experiences that led to her ASD diagnosis. This journey was not just about understanding ASD but also about confronting the realities of navigating the healthcare system as a mother of two, reliant on Medicaid, in a world where disparity in access and treatment is a stark reality.
The wait for an evaluation, the disparities in healthcare access based on insurance, and the cultural disconnect I often felt in the clinical world highlighted the systemic challenges faced by many in similar situations. As a Black woman who had encountered medical malpractice, my trust in the system was fragile, and finding clinicians who understood and respected my cultural perspective was paramount.
The eventual diagnosis of my daughter was a bittersweet moment – a label for our struggles but also the beginning of a new challenge. In my search for appropriate ABA services, I encountered a field where diversity in leadership was lacking, and cultural competency was often an afterthought. This realization was not just about finding the right treatment but also about ensuring that the treatment respected and aligned with our cultural identity and values.
As a clinician and a mother, I witnessed firsthand the nuances of navigating ASD treatment from both sides of the spectrum. My daughter's unique communication style and the traditional approaches to ABA highlighted the need for a more inclusive and culturally sensitive approach to treatment.
These experiences fueled my determination to create a space where families like mine could find understanding, support, and culturally competent care. Seizing 61:1 is more than a consultancy; it is a testament to the journey of countless families navigating ASD, a beacon for change in a field that desperately needs it.
Through this blog, I aim to share not only my professional insights but also the real, lived experiences of families grappling with ASD. Join me as we explore the complexities of autism, advocate for inclusivity and cultural competency in healthcare, and empower each other on this journey.
